Cool maritime breezes are the key to the vineyards of this region where some of the best wine in the country is produced. Research by the pioneers of the wine industry indicated that this cool area would produce the best pinot noir, chardonnay and sauvignon blanc wines.

Passionate winemakers and viticulturists pursued the opportunity the cooler sea breezes provided in this “southernmost region” of Africa and found the key to quality with astounding successes from Elgin to L’Agulhas. The highest rated (John Platter 09) chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, riesling, gewurtztraminer, pinot noir, merlot, mourvedre, pinotage and shiraz are all found in this region. It is a treasure trove of top quality, delicious wine!

But it is the entire experience of a visit to this spectacularly scenic and hospitable area that makes it a must. Being a little “off the beaten track” of the usual wine routes inevitably makes the welcome so much warmer and sincere.
